Take a look at the Volkswagen XL1 – this isn’t the stuff of fantasy, the vehicle will actually make its world debut at this week’s Qatar Motor Show.
The prototype is the third evolutionary stage of Volkswagen’s one-litre car strategy and features fuel consumption at an incredible 261mpg.
Its CO2 emissions value is just 24g/km thanks to a very low aerodynamic drag, a lightweight construction and the plug-in hybrid system which includes a 0.8l two-cylinder TDI engine, an e-motor and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a lithium-ion battery. The vehicle achieves an all-electric range of up to 22miles with total range at 342miles.
The hybrid system is among its highlights with a high voltage energy flow from and to the battery managed by power electronics. The e-motor supports the engine during acceleration while the driver can choose to drive the Volkswagen XL1 in pure electric mode if the car is sufficiently charged.
Its body layout has been designed for everyday practicality coupled with high levels of efficiency. It is 3,888mm long, 1,655mm wide and just 1,156mm tall. Meanwhile, large sections of its body consist of carbon fibre reinforced polymer and the prototype weighs just 795kg.
