San Diego sets sights on energy independence

Several leading companies and authorities in San Diego have united in an effort to improve the area’s energy independence and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The city of San Diego, along with San Diego Gas & Electric, CleanTECH San Diego, UC San Diego and GE have teamed up to create a plan that includes five key electric vehicle initiatives:

-         To utilise smart technology for rapid electric vehicle growth.

-         To streamline home and public charging deployment processes.

-         To research and demonstrate systems to power electric vehicles through clean and renewable sources.

-         To deliver economic growth that will help quantify the economic impacts of the electric vehicle initiatives.

-         Study consumer behaviour to better understand their decisions and identify electric vehicle initiatives.

On top of their backing of electric vehicles, they have also committed to supporting a number of additional efficiency and renewable energy objectives:

-         To support California goals for localised energy generation and 33 per cent renewable energy by 2020.

-         To give customers real-time knowledge and intuitive technology to manage energy usage.

-         To minimise the need for additional infrastructure by optimising the electric grid with two-way communications.

-         To demonstrate the value and impact of innovation to the San Diego community.
