Peugeot 308 cuts emissions below 98g/km

Thanks to a host of new environmentally conscious features, the new Peugeot 308 promises to be one of the most exciting green models around when it debuts at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

The vehicle, which is due to go on sale in April, boasts a new look as well as start and stop e-HDi micro-hybrid technology. It manages to optimise both fuel economy and emissions, which start at just 98g/km.

Its e-HDI technology comes with the entry-level diesel 1.6litre HDI FAP 112bhp Euro 5 engine. The option comes with either a semi-automatic manual gearbox or a full manual gearbox.

Included within the e-HDI technology is an alternator control system to recover energy during deceleration and a hybrid battery to store and deliver additional energy on start-up. This feature helps the vehicle to a 15 per cent reduction in fuel consumption in urban traffic; a 5g/km reduction in CO2 emissions for approved cycle fuel consumption; a 40 per cent restarting; an activation of engine cut-out from 20km/h with a manual gearbox; and increased driveability.

Other factors that help lower the vehicle’s CO2 emissions include having its weight reduced by 25kg; the launch of 16” tyres with very low rolling resistance; the optimisation of operation of the alternator on some engines; improved power steering; and the use of a piloted oil pump on 1.6litre HDI engines.
