GM to bring mild hybrid system to 2012 Buick Regal

The 2012 Buick Regal will be the second Buick model to feature the eAssist mild hybrid system from General Motors.

Currently used in the LaCrosse, the second-generation light electrification technology uses an 115V lithium-ion battery system built with Hitachi power-optimised cells, an electric induction motor generator and regenerative braking.

The lithium-ion battery boosts the 2.4litre Ecotec four cylinder engine with 11kW of electric power assist during heavy acceleration and 15kW of regenerative braking power. It also allows the engine to shut down fuel delivery in certain deceleration conditions.

The Buick Regal with eAssist will have the same power cube used in the LaCrosse and improves fuel economy by 25 per cent when compared to the 2011 four-cylinder/six-speed powertrain. Estimated fuel economy is 26mpg city and 37mpg on the highway.

The new vehicle will go on sale in the autumn.

If carbon dioxide is a serious enough issue for the US and other national governments to even consider 60 miles or more per gallon corporate average fuel economy, then I think that automakers should apply at least some degree of hybrid electric functionality to ALL cars.
