New York is getting serious about its ambition to slash greenhouse gas emissions with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority awarding $4.6million to 17 companies to innovate new transport technologies, decrease reliance on fossil fuels and create jobs.
In addition, $7.5million of private sector investment will be put into the projects to bring total funding to $12.7million. The projects selected include:
- Folsom Technologies International – $500,000 to develop a continuously variable transmission to allow an engine to operate at more efficient speed-torque combinations with a regenerative braking feature.
- Taconic Energy Inc – $500,000 to work on a diesel additive to increase fuel efficiency and reduce engine friction.
- Environmental Energy Technologies – $270,000 for a device that could reduce pollution from a diesel engine by generating an ionic field to oxidise particulate matter in the exhaust.
- Syracuse University – Picks up $260,000 to work on a diesel engine fuel injection system to create a supercritical mixture of fuel and carbon dioxide for a more efficient engine.
- Stony Brook University – Benefits from $50,000 to improve vehicle fuel economy with a thermoelectric generator that captures energy.
