California, New York and Florida are expected to lead the push towards plug-in electric vehicles, according to Pike Research.
Having earlier forecast the plug-in electric vehicle market at national level, Pike now suggests California, New York and Florida will lead sales in the early part of the decade with 366,099, 146,242 and 101,530 cumulative sales between 2011 and 2017, respectively.
New York City and Los Angeles are expected to lead the way with 116,718 and 96,175 plug-in electric vehicle sales by 2017. The research company believes that the large population, combined with early rollout, will result in strong growth rates of 41 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively.
By contrast, Dallas, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston and Washington, DC, are expected to show strong sales of plug-in electric vehicles with all forecast to have fewer than 28,000 plug-in electric vehicles in their markets by 2017.
Relative to population, it is anticipated that plug-in electric vehicle penetration rates will be highest in areas such as Raleigh-Cary, North Carolina; Sacramento-Arden Arcade-Roseville, California; and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California.
