Honda Civic Hybrid to be more efficient than ever

With fuel economy estimates in excess of 40mpg, the new Honda Civic HF and the Honda Civic Hybrid, set for release in the US*,  promise to be more efficient than ever before.

The Civic HF will be the most fuel efficient petrol model in the line-up. It comes with a 140hp, 1.8litre i-VTEC engine and has fuel economy of 41mpg. Meanwhile, the 2012 Civic Hybrid has a lithium-ion battery and a larger 1.5litre i-VTEC engine with fuel economy at 45mpg – an increase of 4mpg compared to the current Civic Hybrid.

Both new models come with aerodynamic components for improved efficiency and Honda ECO Assist technology that promotes individual driving styles.

Also being launched are the Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe and Civic GX Natural Gas models. The Sedan and Coupe achieve an estimated 39mpg while the Civic Natural Gas vehicle is anticipated to earn a seven per cent improvement in fuel economy compared to the current model.

Despite having more fuel economy, the line-up also benefits from improved performance. The Civic Si Sedan and Coupe feature a large, more powerful 2.4litre engine and a six-speed manual transmission with the new engine anticipated to deliver 200hp with 170lb-ft of torque.

More details are expected to be revealed closer to launch.

While the newly-launched, updated Civic model may benefit from power and efficiency, it’s certainly fallen behind most, if not all, of its competitors as far as interior design, dashboard amenities and exterior updating. The new model is extremely less than thrilling. I’ll be selling my 2007 Civic Hybrid this year…and won’t be replacing it with another Honda. They really fell behind with this one.
