Mitsubishi develops lighter power steering controller

It is said to be the world’s smallest and lightest motor controller unit for electric power steering in cars – and it has been developed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

The next generation unit combines the motor and controller into one unit while aligning them on the same axis and improving the internal structure of the controller. The result is that the unit is 50 per cent smaller and 30 per cent lighter than its current products even though it matches their output.

Also upgraded are the motor’s steering assistance capabilities thanks to improved output performance of around 30 per cent. A unique patented control algorithm has been developed for excellent steering sensation and stability.

According to Mark Rakoski, the director of sales and engineering at Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America, 40 per cent of new automobile manufacturers around the world now include electric power steering which can improve fuel economy by three-five per cent. As such there is real demand for smaller and lighter components.

Mitsubishi is now reportedly in discussions with several automobile and steering manufacturers with the hope of commercialising the product in the near future.
