We all know the argument that electric cars aren’t much better for the environment unless the electricity they use comes from renewable sources. Well now, China has committed to increasing its proportion of non-fossil fuels in primary energy use.
During an interview with Xinhau, Zhang Guobao, the former head of China’s National Energy Administration, commented that the country intends to increase its non-fossil fuel use to 11.4 per cent by 2015.
The target has been incorporated into the 12th Five-Year Plan draft and should assist China to its goal of 15 per cent by 2020 – at the moment non-fossil fuels account for just eight per cent of China’s total energy consumption.
Heavy reliance on coal, which accounts for around 70 per cent of China’s energy mix, has put the country under pressure to deal with climate change and protect the environment and so China is now hoping to trim its dependency with the use of cleaner fuels.
