Safety standards created for lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries may soon be subject to safety performance standards after SAE International Battery Standards Committee looked into base standards for the systems.

Its document, entitled “J2929 – Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion Battery System Safety Standard – Lithium-based Rechargeable Cells” provides a foundation from which all battery and vehicle manufacturers can create safe battery systems.

According to Galen E Ressler, the chairman of the Battery Safety Standards Task Force, the adoption of new technologies needs new standards to increase safety and the committee is already working on a second version to expand and enhance the standard and include additional aspects related to thermal propagation, EMC, impact resistance, toxicity and flammability.

It is hoped that the potential for danger will be limited with the creation of these standards and that it will cover all aspects such as battery design, testing, storage, shipping and recycling.
