EPA to begin automotive emission testing

With the Renewable Fuel Standard program looming large, the US Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a contract for automotive emissions testing.

The contract has been handed to AVL for testing that will take place at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Testing will take place at the EPA Laboratory and will look at renewable fuels at both cold and high temperature conditions.

In addition, the EPA has selected AVL to provide its iGeneration technology to test vehicles in a number of climate scenarios. This will include 1,000-14,000lb vehicles with single- or dual drive axles that will be fuelled by petrol, alcohol and other oxygenated fuels, diesel, biodiesel and gaseous fuels.

It is expected that AVL will provide its PUMA automation system with the iGEM vehicle emission testing application software; and will include AMAi60s for sampling and measurement of diluted and raw exhaust; a PSSi60 for particulate sampling; and the CVSi60 constant volume sampler with two independent dilution tunnels that will be used for clean and dirty exhaust samples.
