A cross-Europe electromobility initiative, known as Green eMotion, will be supported by the European Commission with €41.8million in funding.
The project will cover different types of electric vehicles, as well as the development of Smart Grids and will involve car manufacturers, municipalities, universities and research institutions.
Its aim is to exchange and develop experience while facilitating a market roll-out of electric vehicles in Europe. The Commission will make €24.2million available to finance part of its activities.
According to vice president Siim Kallas, transport is currently 96 per cent dependent on oil for its energy needs and this is “totally unsustainable”. So the Transport 2050 Roadmap aims to break this dependency and allow mobility to grow with a reduction of CO2 from transport by at least 60 per cent by 2050.
In addition, the Transport 2050 plans aim to cut the number of conventionally fuelled cars in cities in half by 2030 and phase them out by 2050.
