Manchester festival to celebrate all things green

Residents of South Manchester will be celebrating all things green and sustainable at a festival on April 16.

Chorlton’s Big Green Festival is back for its third year, with green transport set to take centre stage.

The festival – a celebration of sustainable living in Manchester – takes place in and around St Clement’s Church, Edge Lane, Chorlton. This year’s theme will be Bike to the Future and as such, there will be plenty of bike-related activities and attractions on the day, including cycling workshops, a puncture repair race, a bicycle fashion show, a dance-off between two bicycle dance troupes and the largest bike parade through Chorlton so far.

However, Chorlton’s Big Green Festival 2011 will be about much more than just cycling. In the daytime, an exciting programme of live music is planned across two stages, with confirmed acts including Shmoo, Sputnik Sweetheart and Thingumabob & the Thingumajigs. There will also be arts and craft stalls, practical workshops showing how to live greener lives, a wellbeing area and lots of local food and drink. Mr Bloom, star of the CBeebies show Mr Bloom’s Nursery, will be appearing from 1.30pm to inspire kids to grow their own vegetables.

In the evening the festival winds up as the focus shifts inside St Clement’s Church for the Green Chorlton Ceilidh.

Jeff Heie, chair of organisers Green Chorlton, said: “Chorlton’s Big Green Festival is all about celebrating sustainable living and this year’s programme will be the biggest and best yet.”

This year, Chorlton’s Big Green Festival gets underway at 11am and runs until 7pm. Entry to the festival is free. The Green Chorlton Ceilidh starts at 8pm and runs until 11pm. Tickets cost £5 and can be bought on the door.
