The new five seat, four door DS5-unveiled at the opening of the Shanghai International Motor Show-will be the first of Citroen’s cars to use the HYbrid4 diesel hybrid engine.

Set to prove highly popular especially within Europe, the new hybrid diesel engine combines the fuel efficiency of a diesel engine, which is typically better than a petrol equivalent, and boosts it by including hybrid technology-making it better than a petrol hybrid can offer.

As such the new model boasts amazing driving performance without increasing emissions. In cold-hard stats this translates to 200bhp, four-wheel drive capability,emission-free electric power for the city and an acceleration boost function for the open road – all with total CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

Citroen launched the new upmarket DS line-up last year with the introduction of the DS3 supermini, which instantly won critical acclaim and was voted Top Gear’s car of the year for 2010. This is to be followed by the introduction of the DS4 this year-a crossover type car designed to combine the style of a coupé and the flexibility of a five-door hatchback.

Based on the futuristic C-SportLounge concept, the DS5 will now join the range. Designed with the business car sector in mind, the new executive hatchback enjoys a sleek profile and muscular stance complimented by a spacious interior. Its compact body (4.52m long, 1.85m wide) nonetheless allows for a roomy boot (up to 465 litres VDA) reminiscent of a Sportwagon.

Sales of the new model are expected to start in 2012.
