BYD reveals turbocharged engine

Chinese automaker BYD Auto has been relatively quiet in recent months after the Warren Buffet backed business was a real headline grabber back in 2009. However, at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show it revealed plans for a new turbocharged engine.

The company has designed a 1.5litre engine and paired it with a six-speed Tiptronic dual clutch transmission (Ti+DCT).

BYD has been working on the Ti+DCT technology for more than two years and it will be standard on the BYD G6 1.5Ti saloon car and an option on the BYD 3 series models.

It is capable of producing 1.43times more power than the same displacement engine and is the equivalent of a 2.4litre petrol engine. It features maximum torque of 240Nm.

The technology combines manual transmission and conventional automatic transmission with fast acceleration, short gear changes and fast response times. In sports mode it will allow drivers to enjoy a sports car like driving experience.

Will this novel engine run satisfactorily on 87 octane regular unleaded gasoline, or will it (like all too many high performance engines) require 89 to 91, or even 93 octane gas?
