Toyota teams with WiTricity for wireless EV charging

Wireless recharging is tipped to be one of the biggest technological step forwards for the market roll-out of electric cars, making it easier and more convenient to recharge EVs without long trailing cables.

With that in mind Toyota has entered into a technological collaboration with wireless recharging experts WiTricity to develop practical applications for recharging technology.

The Massachusetts-based firm uses resonance wireless charging which does not require direct contact-making it ideal for recharging electric cars. It is more efficient than electro-magnetic induction-another form of wireless charging- but one which requires contact between the charging unit and the car requiring charge.

Toyota says it believes that resonance wireless charging will be suitable for recharging cars and is hoping to accelerate accelerate development and eventual implementation of wireless charging through the collaboration.

The charging of a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle could be as simple and convenient as parking near an embedded charger at a home or in a parking facility-with no need for pesky trialling wires or the need to remember to plug the vehicle in.
