Senators call for more fuel cell funding

There are calls for the Department of Energy to continue to support and invest in fuel cell and hydrogen energy programmes.

US Senators Sherrod Brown and Lindsey Graham have written a letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, along with 12 other senators, requesting continued funding for the two programmes.

The letter outlines the importance of fuel cells and hydrogen in US energy diversification even though funding for DOE programmes have been reduced by five per cent for the remainder of the current fiscal year.

It outlines concerns that domestic manufacturers are on the verge of full scale commercialisation of fuel cell systems and that a lack of funding could make life difficult. Several auto manufacturers are planning commercial fuel cell electric vehicle launches in 2014-2015.
