India plans new fuel efficiency standards

India has set its sights on new fuel efficiency standards with the introduction of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards that give manufacturers until 2015 to increase fuel economy to an average of 40.7mpg.

A report in the Hindustan Times outlines how the CAFE standard is the average fuel efficiency for a manufacturer’s fleet and measures global warming causing carbon dioxide emissions. The draft standard is expected to be 135g/km for the entire fleet in 2015 – down from 165g/km in 2010.

At the same time this means a higher standard for fuel economy with the draft also suggesting there should be further improvements by 2020. It wants the European standard of 110g/km to be achieved by 2020.
