Ford F-150 pick-up truck goes hybrid

One of the most well known pick-up trucks in the world has now gone hybrid, after Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc launched a converted plug-in hybrid version of the Ford F-150.

The vehicle, which is the highest volume selling in the US, will be equipped with Quantum’s new “F-Drive” hybrid system, the PHEV F-150. It also comes with a 35mile electric range before shifting to hybrid mode for a total range of more than 400miles.

Amazingly, it still manages to match the performance of the regular F-150 despite the substantially better fuel economy. It reports an output of 305hp and torque of 380Nm in the 3.7litre V6 version. It has a top speed of 95mph and can accelerate from 0-60mph in electric mode in less than 11 seconds.

To ensure it meets the requirements of fleet customers, the F-Drive is also integrated into the F-150 vehicle so there is no impingement into the cab and it makes full ground clearance.
