A123 to supply Smith Electric Vehicle batteries

An agreement has been reached between Smith Electric Vehicles and A123Systems for the latter to supply battery modules for Smith’s all-electric commercial vehicles.

The A123 battery technology will first be featured in the Smith Newton truck, which is an all-electric, 7.5-15ton vehicle that is available globally and has customers including Coca-Cola, Sainsbury’s, the US Marine Corps and Frito-Lay. The modules are expected to be integrated into battery packs from the second half of 2011.

According to Bryan Hansel, the president and CEO of Smith Electric Vehicles, the design of the modules means they can meet individual customers’ range specifications. This allows consumers to maximise performance levels while enjoying a faster return on their investment.
