Hanover, Germany, will host a new car sharing concept from the Volkswagen Group that will feature 200 Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion vehicles.
The vehicle features a 1.6TDI diesel engine with an average fuel consumption of 62mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km. It includes a start-stop system and brake energy regeneration. In the long term it is expected that the project in Hanover will also involve the VW Caddy and the VW Beetle.
At the start there will be 50 pick-up and drop-off locations throughout the city and this could later reach 100. It is hoped that high availability will make it easy for consumers to collect and return their cars to these stations.
Customers that register can book a Golf BlueMotion via the internet, a special app, or a call centre, up to five minutes before the vehicle is needed. They hold a chip card which they scan over a reader fitted to the car and the vehicle is unlocked. The ignition key, meanwhile, is located inside with the driver able to complete authorisation using a PIN on the touch screen.
In addition, all vehicles will be fitted with navigation and entertainment systems with customers issued with an additional SD memory card for this equipment so they can save individual destinations, routes and store music.
