News in brief: VW reveals electric car plans

It hasn’t been one of the quickest off the mark with electric cars, but Volkswagen is now determined to make up for lost time.

The German car maker plans to introduce electric vehicles based on the Up and Golf vehicles in the Japanese market within three years.

According to a report in the business daily The Nikkei, the German giant will also target more competitively priced hybrid vehicles after unveiling its first hybrid car in January, a luxury sport utility vehicle priced at 8.98million yen.

Volkswagen expects 14 per cent of passenger car sales in the Japanese market to be hybrid vehicles this year and wants to add less expensive models to boost its consumer base.
