BYD electric vehicles head to Singapore

The expansion of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD continues in earnest after the company signed a memorandum of understanding with SMRT Corporation in Singapore.

The two will now enter discussions about the possibility of establishing a joint venture to distribute BYD’s eBUSes and e6 taxis.

SMRT was the first public transport provider in Singapore and South East Asia to buy Euro V compliant buses and now has more than 140 of them on the roads. Now the corporation’s executive vice president Teo Chew Hoon says the company is looking into using electric vehicles for both its bus and taxi fleets.

Both the BYD eBus-12 and the e6 taxi can travel up to 186miles on a single electric charge. The e6 has already been employed in Shenzhen, China, for more than a year and the fleet of 50 e6 Shenzhen taxis have now racked up 1.86million miles.
