With renewed emphasis on the compact car market in the US, which vehicle is ahead of the pack in terms of sales?
The answer is the Chevrolet Cruze, which posted 22,711 units during May and made its second consecutive appearance on the top 10 across all US auto segments.
Helping Chevrolet to gain an 11.9 per cent share in the compact car market, up from 9.5 per cent a year ago, Chevrolet has also taken a grip on total US car sales – of which it made up 16 per cent in May. In fact, four-cylinder models – such as the Equinox and Malibu, as well as the Cruze – now account for 51 per cent of Chevrolet retail sales. That’s up from 36 per cent in the same month one year ago.
The Cruze is now only behind the Honda Civic in sales of compact cars for the first five months of the year with 98,076 units compared to 110,086 units.
There were strong sales for other compact cars during the month too, with the Ford Focus a close second at 22,303 units; followed by the Hyundai Elanta with 20,006 units; the Honda Civic with 18,431 units; and the Toyota Corolla with 16,895 units.
