There is no questioning Ford’s commitment to electric vehicles after it decided to triple the production capacity of its electrified line-up to more than 100,000 units through to 2013.
The decision comes on the back of Ford selling approximately 35,000 electrified vehicles a year, led by the Fusion Hybrid and Escape Hybrid; and will bolster volumes of its C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid, which are set for production next year.
Its plan is to invest in even more capacity for its five-passenger C-MAX electrified models for North America with Ford planning five electric vehicles on the continent by 2012 including the Transit Connect Electric, which is already on sale; the Focus Electric, which goes on sale this year; and the C-MAXI Energi and C-MAX Hybrid as well as another next-generation hybrid in 2012.
Currently, the Ford C-MAX is selling in Europe at twice the rate of last year’s model and Ford is finding new ways to produce more models than originally expected at its Valencia, Spain plant.
Both the C-MAX Hybrid and the C-MAX Energi models will be built alongside the new 2012 Ford Focus and Focus Electric at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan.
