Audi takes plug-in hybrid to Le Mans

Set for release before the end of the year, Audi will bring its e-tron Spyder plug-in diesel hybrid car to the “Le Mans vers le future” event in which manufacturers showcase innovative drivetrain technologies.

The Audi e-tron Spyder includes two asynchronous electric motors that drive the front wheels with a combined 64kW of power and 352Nm of torque. There is a twin-turbocharged 3.0TDI that delivers up to 300hp of power and 650Nm of torque which can be funnelled to the rear wheels via a seven-speed S tronic. The three units can either operate separately or in unison with the maximum output at 388hp and torque at 900Nm.

Its statistics are staggering as the concept car is able to race from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and reaches an electronically governed top speed of 155mph.

Despite its amazing performance credentials however, its fuel economy figures are 107mpg and it emits just 59g/km of CO2. It also has an all-electric range of 31miles and a top all-electric speed of 37mph.

In typical driving conditions, the drive management system sends 75 per cent of the power to the rear wheels and the remaining 25 per cent to the front wheels. It also selectively applies the brakes to slow the wheels individually.

Overall, the vehicle weighs just 3,197lbs with its low weight boosted by a primarily aluminium body constructed on the Audi Space Frame principle.
