BMW developing electric scooter

It is not often we look at two-wheel vehicles on the website but when BMW reveals that it is working on an electric scooter it is worth taking notice of what they are doing.

Currently in concept form only, the BMW E-Scooter is the German company’s attempt at expanding the appeal and usability of an electric-power scooter. Unlike the current crop of battery-powered scooters, BMW claims that this scooter has a range of around 60 miles on a single charge, and hit speeds of over 40mph.

Receiving funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, BMW has also ensured that the E-Scooter can deal with real world situations – such as hill starts with pillion passenger, overtaking power when required, and a battery which can be recharged from any standard household plug socket.

One of the most original features of the concept is that the vehicle doesn’t have a conventional main frame. Instead, the aluminium battery casing – which also contains the electronic system required for battery cell monitoring – takes over the function of the frame.

The steering head support is connected to it, as is the rear frame and the left-hand mounted single swing arm with directly hinged, horizontally installed shock absorber.

Whilst I welcome BMW getting into this market, I have to say that they are behind the pace with this. The Vectrix already has a top range of around 60 miles and a top speed of 62 mph. I’ve been riding mine for three years.

People concerned about our environment should know that there are piston-engine motor scooters that attain 60 miles per gallon. That is as many miles per gallon as even the most passionate auto-haters are currently demanding.
