Regional development agency Forward Swindon was awarded a £250,000 grant from South West England Regional Development Agency in order to build the fuel station at Honda in Swindon.

Supplier of industrial gases, BOC will now install and operate the facility due to open in September.

The South West region is already set to become an important test bed area for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with plans to develop a Hydrogen Highway along the M4, with a series of refuelling points dotted between, Wales through Swindon extending into the Midlands and into London.

The first commercially available hydrogen fuel cell, the Honda FCX Clarity has been taking part in leasing trials in the US and Japan since 2008.
