New Toyota Yaris order book opens

The third generation of Toyota’s supermini, the Yaris, is now available to order ahead of first deliveries this September.

The Japanese carmaker has decided to keep the Yaris’ engine line up unchanged – so motorists have a choice of 1.0-litre and 1.33-litre petrol units and a 1.4-litre D-4D turbo diesel. However, thanks to aerodynamic improvements and weight saving measures all new Yaris’ offer CO2 emission improvements over the previous model.

The compact 1.0 litre VVT-i engine is expected to see CO2 emissions fall by 7% to 111g/km, with fuel efficiency improved by 4% to 58.9mpg.

The larger petrol engine when mated to Toyota’s CVT transmission will have CO2 emissions of 118g/km and a fuel economy figure of 56.5mpg.

Finally, the 1.4 litre diesel unit sees a 7% improvement in fuel economy to 72.4mpg and CO2 emissions are 6% lower at 104g/km.

Perhaps the biggest feature new to Yaris is Toyota’s decision to include its Touch and Go audio system on all Yaris’ as standard (apart from the entry level model). Rarely seen in the supermini segment, it is a system which offers touchscreen controls, USB port, rear parking camera, and Bluetooth. While the system can also be upgraded into a sat nav.

In the UK the car will come in a choice of four trim levels – T2, TR, SR, and T Spirit. With Toyota expecting the TR to make up the lion’s share of sales.

Key features of the TR include 15” alloy wheels, air conditioning, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Toyota Touch and Go with touchscreen audio controls, Bluetooth and rear parking camera.

Regarding the Yaris Diesel: Will it comply with emissions standards for oxides of nitrogen and particulates, especially in the USA and most especially, California?

The Diesel engine has much to recommend it as an automotive powerplant. Unfortunately mother nature throws a frustrating showstopper in our faces in that D. produces a lot of NOx and particulates. Otto cycle engines are able to meet NOx/CO/CxHy limits by using 3-way catalytic converters, but this approach won’t work with lean-burn Otto cycle or Diesel engines. You can meet NOx limits with Diesels by using selective catalytic reduction, but that requires having a supply of urea (“AdBlue”) on hand.

I like the idea of the Yaris, though. Hopefully it will offer amenities like air conditioning, power windows, adequate instrumentation and wood trim, which I’ve grown accustomed to on my Corolla.
