Fisker Karma controls exhaust emissions

The new plug-in petrol electric luxury saloon car, the Fisker Karma, will soon benefit from emission after-treatment catalysts after an agreement was reached with Clean Diesel Technologies Inc.

Clean Diesel has already begun shipping the catalyst to Fisker with Charles Call, the company’s chief executive officer, believing its catalyst technology will meet Fisker’s high performance standards.

He noted that controlling the emissions from an engine in an extended range vehicle can be challenging because of the potentially infrequent engine operation and the increased number of cold starts. As such, the after-treatment solution needs catalyst engineering and modification of the engine unit to achieve low emissions.

Clean Diesel is supplying its materials science expertise with its solution keeping the nano-sized structure of the precious metal elements of the catalyst small, while resisting agglomeration of the precious metal particles to maximise the surface area available.
