A new partnership between non-profit firm Inteli and utilities company Oracle is to support the installation of 1,350 electric vehicle charging stations in Portugal.
The new project will see around 1,300 standard charging points and 50 fast charging points rolled out across 25 municipalities and main highways across the country. It forms part of the country’s MOBI-E project which aims to make electric mobility easily accessible and create a standard for recharging infrastructure.
Like many industrialised countries, Portugal does not produce its own fossil fuel resources but unlike others, it has been successful at tapping into alternatives and now produces 43 per cent of its current electricity from renewable sources such as wind and hydropower.
The project will help support Portugal’s aim to be less reliant on fossil fuels and in turn, reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, Portugal will host one of Renault-Nissan’s battery plants, which will support the rollout of electric vehicles across Europe.
"Portugal is leading the charge in making an electric vehicle future a reality and we’re excited to be part of such a pioneering project. With motor vehicles being a major contributor to carbon dioxide emissions and with an estimated 800 million motor vehicles on the road worldwide, e-mobility solutions are crucial if we are to meet the European Union’s 20-20-20 targets — to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2020," said Bastian Fischer, Vice President, Oracle Utilities.
