A123 to bring energy storage to wind turbines

Regular readers of TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk will be familiar with the name A123Systems as one of the leading players in the emerging lithium-ion battery industry. However, it’s not just in the area of electric cars that the company is making important in-roads.

For example, the lithium-ion battery manufacturer will now supply a 500kW lithium-ion energy storage solution to Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) – the third largest manufacturer of wind turbines inChina.

The system is expected to be installed at the company’s manufacturing facility inHangzhoucity and is designed as a demonstration project to help DEC evaluate how energy storage can address challenges associated with the rapid growth of wind power in the country.

The Chinese government has already set ambitious goals to increase wind power inChinato around 170GW by 2020 and advanced storage technology is seen as a potential solution to the variability of wind energy generation.

It will be the first time A123 has introduced an energy storage system inChinawhere only around 72 per cent of the country’s total wind power generating capacity is connected to the grid. This is because of the low voltage ride through capability which means that during periods of low grid voltage, wind farms are disconnecting and slow to reconnect when voltage reconnects.
