Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid makes first deliveries

The very first Fisker Karma models have begun to roll off the production line, as the firm makes its first deliveries of the plug-in hybrid model.

First models are already been snatched up, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore and Colin Powell rumoured to be among the first customers.

Ray Lane, Chairman of Fisker and managing partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has also taken delivery of a new Karma model. The Silver Mirage coloured Karma was handed over to Mr Lane on Tuesday (July 2011).

Commenting Mr Lane said: “Today I am a true car enthusiast and thrilled to be getting the keys to this spectacular new Fisker Karma.”

Designed by Henrik Fisker, the Karma is assembled in Finland, the Karma will be sold in North America through a network of premium brand retailers and globally through luxury importers.

The four passenger sedan, known as the first full production, premium model of its kind, has a top speed in excess of 125 mph and will accelerate from 0-to-60 in 5.9 seconds. Thanks to its plug-in battery drivetrain, the Karma can achieve the equivalent of 100 mpg, despite its performance car driving abilities.

Fully charged in as little as six hours from any 110-, 220- or 240-volt outlet the Fisker Karma has an all-electric range of 50 miles (80km) and a total range of 300 miles (483km).

Fisker Automotive was founded in 2007, with the aim of producing electric vehicles with extended range, to deliver ‘uncompromised luxury’.

For many such plug-in hybrid models are seen as a natural progression from the current generation of hybrid cars.
