EcoBoost engine leads Ford F-150 sales

Need proof of the popularity of economical engines? The 365hp, 3.5litre twin-turbocharged V6 Ford F-150 is outselling ALL other six-cylinder trucks combined, according to Ford.

The F-150 EcoBoost is the highest volume vehicle in Ford’s expanding line-up of cars, trucks and SUVs. It is one of four new, more fuel efficient engines that Ford introduced for the F-150 in 2011 and another – the 3.7litre, 302hp V6 – is outselling all full-sized trucks from Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge and Toyota. Both new Ford truck engines now account for 79.6 per cent market share of the V6 full-sized trucks that were sold in July.

During July, Ford sold 49,104 F-Series trucks with the EcoBoost V6 accounting for 40 per cent of the mix, with the 3.7litre taking 16 per cent of sales.

According to Doug Scott, Ford’s truck group operating manager, the new V6 powerplants are changing the way customers think about truck engines. He described the 3.5litre EcoBoost V6 engine as being in a class of its own as it is able to tow as much as 11,300lbs while delivering 22mpg.

The 3.7litre F-150 has an EPA rating of 17mpg city and 23mpg highway; while the F-150 EcoBoost is certified at 16mpg city and 22mpg highway.

The next vehicles to benefit from the engines will be the Edge crossover and the Explorer SUV.
