A land speed attempt for the fastest electric car in the UK was aborted over the weekend, after the car suffered a mechanical failure.
Don Wales and his son Joe were attempting to smash their own record for the fastest electric car on the Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire in South Wales over the weekend. But the attempt to break the 137mph record failed after the right front wheel of the famous Bluebird Electric car hit a hole in the sands, causing the suspension to fail.
It is the second aborted record attempt from the team this summer, since a trial back in June was cancelled as the team waited on the delayed delivery of a vital part for the battery-powered car.
The current record was set by Don in 2000, but now the pair hope the Bluebrid can top that, aiming for a new record of 150mph.
Wales, who is the nephew of Donald Campbell CBE and Grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, has been maintaining the Campbell record-breaking tradition since establishing the UK Land Speed Record for an electric car in 1998. In 2009 he set the current World Land Speed Record for a steam car of 148mph.
The Bluebird Electric team now hope to reschedule the attempt once the car is repaired and eventually aim to break the world record for an electric car, which currently stands at 307mph.
