General Motors has already got into the electric vehicle race with its Chevrolet brand – and now Cadillac is the next in line.
The company has announced that the Cadillac Converj extended range electric vehicle concept will indeed be made into a production car – that will be called the Cadillac ELR.
Development of the ELR is just beginning with details on its performance, price and timing yet to be announced. However, what we do know is that it will feature a Chevy Volt-like electric propulsion system with a T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack, a four-cylinder engine generator and an electric drive unit. The ELR name has been selected to indicate its electric propulsion technology.
It is hoped that the ELR will be able to follow the Converj Concept’s lead by combining electrification with the desirability of a grand touring coupe.
In addition, Cadillac has announced it will add two new vehicles to its product line-up in 2012 – the XTS large luxury saloon car and an all-new luxury compact saloon code-named ATS.
