Toyota to introduce seventh generation Camry

It has been the best selling car in the US for nine years running – and now Toyota has introduced the seventh generation of the Camry.

The 2012 Camry will come with three powertrain choices: a revised 2.5litre, four-cylinder petrol engine; an enhanced 3.5litre V6; and a revised version of the Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain for the Camry Hybrid.

The Hybrid model has an estimated fuel economy of 41mpg combined – a 24 per cent boost compared to the previous generation, largely due to the new hybrid powertrain. It produces a combined 200hp, which is a seven per cent gain over the previous model, and has a lighter overall vehicle weight which helps contribute to better performance and fuel economy. It can race from 0-60mph in 7.6seconds.

Among the improvements to the system are: a new hybrid transaxle and inverter, which features reduced inverter electrical loss and reduced mechanical loss; a new engine with reduced friction of moving parts; and new EV and ECO modes have been added. It also includes low rolling resistance tyres.

The ECO mode is meant to maximise fuel savings across all driving conditions as it modifies or smoothes the electronic throttle control programme to reduce throttle response while also improving acceleration in low-traction conditions. Meanwhile, the EV drive mode means the car can operate on its electric motor alone for up to 1.6miles at lower speeds (approximately 25mph).
