General Motors sets another record in China

It was yet another staggeringly successful for month for General Motors (GM) and its joint ventures in China during August, as it set another sales record.

The company achieved the third best sales month in 2011 with domestic vehicle sales rising 13.4 per cent on an annual basis to 205,885 units. This means that for the first eight months of the year, GM and its joint ventures have sold 1,652,693 vehicles in China alone – up 5.4 per cent on the same period last year.

Part of the success can be attributed to Shanghai GM, which saw its sales in China increase by 21.7 per cent to 98,674 units. Meanwhile, mini-commercial vehicle and passenger car sales by SAIC-GM-Wuling were up 8.2 per cent on an annual basis to 102,959 units. Both were August sales records.

Buick is one of the most popular GM brands in China– its line-up grew 22.6 per cent year-on-year with sales of the original Excelle passenger car hitting 23,700 units; while sales of the Excelle XT and GT reached 11,303 units.

Elsewhere, Chevrolet sales set an August record of 46,370 units with the Cruze leading the charge with sales of 19,910 units, up 72.7 per cent year-on-year. Cadillac luxury vehicle sales increased by 55.8 per cent to 2,531 units with the SRX luxury SUV proving to be the most popular with 1,772 units sold; while sales of Wuling mini-commercial vehicles also increased six per cent year-on-year to 95,837 units.
