There aren’t too many SUVs that are worth reporting on at TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk – but the third generation Mercedes M-Class may be the exception that proves the rule.
The vehicle consumes an average of 25 per cent less fuel than previous models partly because it comes with a range of advanced engines – including BlueTEC diesel units and the new generation BlueDIRECT petrol engine – a class leading drag co-efficient figure of 0.32 and a host of BlueEFFICIENCY measures.
In terms of fuel consumption, the leading engine in the line-up is the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC. It offers fuel consumption of 39mpg with emissions cut to 158g/km – its range is up to 932miles when equipped with an optional larger tank.
The BlueTEC engines put the emphasis on downsizing. The ML20 BlueTEC 4MATIC boasts maximum torque of 500Nm at 1,600rpm and a rated output of 150kW with acceleration from 0-62mph in 9.0seconds and a top speed of 130mph. As for the BlueDIRECT petrol unit, it works in combination with multi-spark ignition with output increased by 12.5 per cent to 225kW and maximum torque leaping to 370Nm.
Among the BlueEFFICIENCY elements employed in the vehicle are: optimised damping, which allows a reduction in the slip of the torque converter lock-up clutch even under low loads; friction optimised bearings; a new transmission oil thermal management; an optimised belt driver with decoupler; an internal heat exchanger with sophisticated sensor system; while the vehicle is also the most aerodynamic SUV in its class.
