Ford to introduce new EcoBoost engine in Focus

Ford has announced the first three vehicles that will benefit from its new 1.0litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine – they will be the Focus, followed by the C-MAX and the all-new Ford B-MAX.

The engine is the latest addition to the Ford EcoBoost family, which currently has a capacity ranging from 1.6litres to 3.5litres globally.

There will be two versions featured in the Focus in Europe– one with 100PS and another with 120PS, with five- and six-speed transmissions respectively. The engine will then be made available in North America, China and additional regions.

It will be the smallest engine currently produced by Ford and yet will deliver power and performance to rival the 1.6litre petrol engine while emitting less than 120g/km of CO2. It has been developed at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the UK and comes with a high performance turbocharger design that can reach nearly 250,000rpm with peak torque of 170Nm.

In addition, the design team put the emphasis on delivering smooth and refined performance. The engine refinement has been improved thanks to an innovative design that covers the two main engine drive belts in oil and offers quieter and more efficient running with the durability of a chain.

Further technical details will be revealed ahead of its launch in early 2012.
