Swedish carmaker Volvo has outlined its technological future, which will be based on a new engine range consisting solely of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines; and scalable vehicle architecture.
The new architecture sees Volvo place the emphasis on economies of scale within its own model range. There will be several platforms that share the same basis chassis structure, seat frame, electrical system and driveline. The intention is that the scalable vehicle architecture will allow for a model range consisting of cars based on the same joint modules and interfaces.
Crucially, the new architecture allows for electrification on all levels including start/stop technology and pure electric drive – without impeding on interior space and load space. It also allows for all future multimedia and connectivity solutions and will form the backbone of Volvo’s drive to reinforce its leading position in active safety.
Meanwhile, the new engine range will be known as VEA (Volvo Environmental Architecture) and will only feature four-cylinder engines. This will mean that the number of unique parts can be reduced by 60 per cent; while the powertrains are up to 90kg lighter; and fuel economy is improved by as much as 35 per cent. They will meet all new emissions regulation up to at least 2017.
Also included in the innovation programme will be a new eight-speed automatic transmission and a new Flywheel KERS system.
In addition, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Volvo revealed the Concept You luxury saloon car concept. It shows how the new Scalable Platform Architecture can open up dynamic design possibilities as well as technological and industrial advantages.
