Chevrolet reveals Sonic fuel economy details

The 2012 version of the Chevrolet Sonic (known in some markets at the Chevrolet Aveo) will boast fuel economy of 40mpg on the highway and 29mpg in the city, resulting in a combined fuel economy total of 33mpg.

Its statistics will make it one of the most fuel efficient small cars in the North American market matching the 2012 Ford Fiesta SFE and the 2012 Hyundai Accent. It can also reach 60mph in 8.2 seconds with its 1.4litre turbo engine.

The engine itself boasts 138hp and 200Nm of torque between 2,500 and 4,900rpm. This wide maximum torque range helps it deliver a better driving experience and performance thanks to features such as: a low-mass hollow-frame cast iron block; chain driven cams; roller-finger camshaft followers; piston-cooling oil jets and integrated oil cooler; dual overhead camshafts; an electronically controlled thermostat; and a variable-flow oiling pump.

Meanwhile, the Sonic 1.8litre manual offers fuel economy of 26mpg city and 35mpg highway; while the automatic achieves 25mpg city and 35mpg highway.

When it goes on sale in the US its suggested retail price begins at $14,495. It will be the only sub-compact car currently being built in the US at General Motors’ Orion Assembly facility in Lake Orion, Michigan.
