Two of the biggest names in car manufacturing could soon join forces after Proton Holdings announced it was in serious discussions with Mitsubishi Motors over strengthening their competitiveness.
Collaborative items are being considered and would potentially include: joint production of engines inMalaysia; production of Mitsubishi vehicles at Proton facilities; sharing major parts and components between Mitsubishi’s global small and Proton’s global small car; and provision of Mitsubishi’s future technologies including electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicle technology.
The two have been working on feasibility studies since late 2010 and have now identified areas for potential collaboration.
Back in 2008, they signed an agreement on the development and production of new vehicles at Proton, with Proton producing a four-door saloon car, the Inspira, which is based on a Mitsubishi vehicle.
