Chevrolet introduces new Ecotec engine family

Chevrolet has released details of its new Ecotec 2.5litre four-cylinder engine that will mark the debut of the all-new Ecotec engine family.

The new engine has been described by General Motors as more efficient, refined and powerful than its 2.4litre predecessor and it will be standard in the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. It is estimated that it will deliver 190hp and 180lb-ft of torque – that’s about 12 per cent more horsepower and 16 per cent more torque than the outgoing model. It offers highway fuel economy of more than 30mpg.

Increased efficiency was seen as a high priority and was achieved through lower engine friction, which was reduced to 16 per cent across the entire speed range. An all new combustion system was developed that features improved knock resistance and higher flowing intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder head which helps to boost efficiency, power and torque.

As with the current generation of Ecotec engines, the new 2.5litre model will also feature a high pressure, direct injection fuel system and dual overhead camshafts with continuously variable valve timing. It is also expected to be one of the most quiet and refined engines in the segment with the engine’s noise specifically targeted by pushing radiated noises into a higher frequency range above 2,000Hz to be more pleasing to the ear.

The new Chevrolet Malibu will be sold in nearly 100 countries across six continents with pricing to be announced later this year.
