Volvo boosts electric car power

Swedish carmaker Volvo has shown a firm commitment to its electric cars by ordering more than 250 electric drivetrain systems to power the C30 Electric from BRUSA Elektronik.

The BRUSA 111hp electric motor delivers torque of 220Nm and can accelerate from 0-31mph in four seconds; and to 62mph in less than 11 seconds. It helps the car to a top speed of 80mph with BRUSA not only providing the hybrid synchronous motor, but also the drivetrain components such as the motor controller and battery charger.

A 3.7kW charger is included that charges the battery in six- to eight hours at 16Amp. The 24kWh battery offers a certified range of 101miles though Volvo reports its practical range at 93miles.

In addition, the Volvo C30 Electric has undergone several safety tests with one of the batteries installed where the fuel tank is normally located and the other in a special compartment in the car’s tunnel. It is deemed that the C30 Electric is as safe as any other Volvo car.

It is expected that more will be built based on market interest with the Volvo C30 Electric built in the Ghent factory before being transferred to Gothenburg for installation of the motor, batteries and other electronics. It will be delivered to leasing customers throughout Europe, with the first deliveries to begin in 2011.
