Japanese carmaker Toyota has been at the forefront of hybrid car design since the launch of its Prius model nearly 15 years ago. Now however, it is ready to break a mileage record with its latest model.
According a report in business daily The Nikkei, the new compact hybrid, known as the Toyota Aqua Hybrid, will report fuel economy of 94mpg.
The new hybrid car will use the same powertrain as the Prius but feature a more compact design – and will not only beat its 32km fuel economy (it achieves 40km) but will also sell for around 1.7million yen – that’s 300,000 yen cheaper than the Prius.
It is expected that the Toyota Aqua will be targeted at younger drivers with the carmaker bidding to expand its customer base. It will be sold through domestic dealership channels with a North American rollout also planned.
