Carmakers to reveal universal charging system

A collaboration of car makers including Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche, and Volkswagen are to present their new Combined Charging System at the 15th International VDI-Congress and Exhibition “Electronic Systems for Motor Vehicles” in Baden-Baden, Germany tomorrow.

BMW's i8- one of the car makers involved in developing the new charging systemThe new charging system, developed in collaboration with the American car makers Ford and General Motors (GM), is a universal charging system which needs only a single charging interface to allow customers to charge with all existing charging methods: one-phase AC-charging, fast three-phase AC-charging, DC-charging at home or ultra-fast DC-charging at public charging stations.

This new system, presented for the first time to the public, will provide an important step in the harmonisation of charging systems and electric cars from around the world.

The concept’s presentation at Baden-Baden will show the installation of the Combined Charging System in electric vehicles produced by makers involved in the project. It is expected that the new system will be ready for deployment mid 2012 and then introduced into the market.
