Chevrolet announces electric Spark for 2013

Chevrolet announced today that it will be unleashing an electric version of its popular Spark supermini.

The GM-owned brand revealed plans to make a Spark EV in ‘limited quantities’ and sell it select US and global markets from 2013. The only place we know for definite will get tits hands on the new electric car is the green-minded state of California.

“The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option,” said Jim Federico, global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles at Chevrolet. “It complements Chevrolet’s growing range of electrified vehicles, including the Volt extended-range EV and the 2013 Malibu Eco with eAssist technology.”

Chevrolet already has prototype electric cars running in demonstration fleets in Shanghai (the Sail EV), Korea (Cruze EV) and India (Beat EV-another name for the Spark). The feedback from these trials will be used to develop the Spark EV.

“Our global demo fleets continue to provide insight into the needs of electric vehicle customers living in urban environments,” said Federico. “The Spark EV is another step in Chevrolet’s plan to provide customers with a variety of electrification solutions to address the lifestyle and transportation needs of people around the world.”

A123 Systems will supply the advanced nanophosphate lithium-ion battery packs that will power the Spark EV. Details on specific markets, range, quantities and pricing will be announced later. We’ll bring you the full details as soon as we know.

One aspect of the automotive scene I find intellectually frustrating is, while automakers are under increasing pressure to increase fuel economy we are also seeing cars becoming larger owing to ever more stringent safety rules. Where I work, I see a Chevrolet Cruze in the parking lot. It is not that small a car; it looks bigger than the Toyota Corolla I drive.

Years ago Chevrolet had a small car, the Geo Metro. That car, if retrofitted with such post-1990 technologies as multiport fuel injection and more efficient transmissions, could easily attain 50 miles per gallon. Unfortunately the Geo Metro would not pass muster with the increasingly stringent safety regulations that have come into effect since then. Sooner or later we are going to have to prioritize. What do we want, 50 miles per gallon fuel economy or absolute guarantees of one’s safety when traveling?

Hopefully the Spark will not be regulated out of existence in the USA by safety considerations. We don’t object to motorcyclists risking their lives, so why should we object if any one or more of us chooses to trade off personal safety to attain more miles per gallon?
