Cell phone and digital service provider AT&T has backed up its commitment to green vehicles by deploying the 4,000th alternative fuel vehicle in its US corporate fleet.
The vehicles are part of a 10year strategy to invest up to $565million in replacing around 15,000 fleet vehicles before 2018.
A natural gas vehicle in Chicago was the one that took the company to the milestone. It is actually one of 165 alternative fuel vehicles deployed in Illinois with AT&T also operating a mix of other vehicles including all-electric and hybrids.
According to company predictions, AT&T believes it will purchase around 8,000 compressed natural gas vehicles by 2013 at a cost of $350million. It will invest a further $215million to 2018 to replace around 7,100 fleet passenger cars with alternative fuel models.
It expects that the changeover will save 49million gallons of petrol over the 10year deployment period and reduce carbon emissions by 211,000 metric tons.
