Daihatsu to expand fuel saving efforts

Toyota’s mini-vehicle specialist, Daihatsu, is expected to apply the fuel conserving technology that was first used in the Mira e:S vehicle to other models in its line-up.

Both the Daihatsu Move and Daihatsu Tanto are expected to benefit from the technology, according to reports in The Nikkei.

Currently the Daihatsu Mira e:S has one of the lowest prices and some of the leading fuel economy figures among petrol vehicles – it runs at 70.6mpg. The carmaker received 25,000 orders for the car in the first two weeks from its debut – and around 40,000 in the first month, smashing its target of 10,000 units a month.

Now both the Move and Tanto will benefit from the same engine and no-idling function to bring them to nearly the same level of fuel economy. The engine features highly efficient combustion and stops even before the car does.

The Tanto and Move are the most popular vehicles in the Daihatsu line-up – it sold about 138,000 Move vehicles and 169,000 Tanto vehicles in the fiscal year 2010 – that’s more than half of its mini-vehicle sales.
